Police Warn Residents Of Scam Involving Internet Transactions
A new scam is making the rounds in the area, police are cautioning. The scam has become prevalent involving Internet transactions on platforms such as Craigslist and other similar sites, the Stamford Police Department said. Police said that the scam takes place when a suspect, posing as a buyer, pays the victim for an item with either a fraudulent or bad check. Before the check can bounce or be discovered as a fake, and before the item is shipped, the suspect will then claim he no longer wants to complete the transaction, asking for the victim to refund the money. A now-former state corrections officer from Lodi admitted in federal court in Newark on Friday that he collected images of child abuse at a time when the government said he was trying to arrange a tryst with what he thought was an 8-year-old girl. Two Fairfield County motorcycle owners had their bikes ripped off by a man posing a potential buyer in two separate incidents on Wednesday. According to Trumbull Police Lt. Keith Golding, a New Haven resident, and an Orange resident reported to police that their motorcycles were stolen after bringing them to Trumbull to sell. An Edgewater man conspired with the owner of a shuttered go-go bar to use stolen credit card information – and illegally acquired gift cards – to steal more than $12 million, authorities said. An area man lost his motorcycle to a rip-off artist after listing the bike for sale on Craigslist and letting the "buyer" take a test drive, according to Trumbull Police. Lt. Keith Golding said the man reported on Monday that he had made arrangements to meet with a potential buyer in Trumbull to sell the 2006 Yamaha YZ450 motorcycle.
