Detours To Start On Sunrise Highway Be ready for potential delays along Sunrise Highway in Suffolk County. Road crews will have overnight detours in place near Brentwood Road (Exit 44) in Islip beginning at 10 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, according to the Department of Transportation. Video: 17-Year-Old Rescues Long Island Woman Who Drove Vehicle Into Bay A Long Island teenager is being credited with saving an 18-year-old woman who drove her car into Patchogue Bay. Suffolk County Police said Mia Samolinksi, of Patchogue, was driving a Subaru Outback in a parking lot near South Ocean Avenue at around 10 p.m. Tuesday, June 14. At some point, she accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake, sending the vehicle right into the water, according to police. FedEx Driver Killed, Two Others Hospitalized In Crash On Long Island A FedEx driver was killed and two others were sent to the hospital after a crash on Long Island. The 23-year-old man was driving a delivery truck in Levittown just after 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 15, when he collided with a box truck on Jerusalem Avenue, according to Nassau County Police. He was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Two men who were in the box truck suffered minor injuries and were expected to be released from the hospital, police said. Man Admits To Fatally Shooting Capital District Grocery Worker The man accused of gunning down a Capital District grocery worker has confessed to the killing. Rensselaer County resident Jhajuan Sabb, age 22, of Troy, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and assault charges Tuesday, June 14, in the death of Sharaf Addailam. The 35-year-old was killed May 21, 2021 in Albany’s West Hill neighborhood when Sabb fired a handgun toward a group of people standing outside of Mr. Sam Food Market on First Street, according to the Albany County District Attorney. Capital District Man Admits To Receiving, Possessing Child Porn A man from the Capital District is facing years in prison after admitting to possessing child pornography. Rensselaer County resident Derek Luch, age 50, of Troy, pleaded guilty Tuesday, June 14, to receiving and possessing the illegal material, according to the US Attorney’s Office in the North District. Luch admitted that between May and October 2021 he used a file sharing service to download and receive numerous images depicting minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct, prosecutors said. Woman Killed By Hit-Run Driver On Long Island A woman has died after being struck by a hit-and-run driver on Long Island. The victim was walking in Franklin Square just before 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 15 when she was struck by an Infiniti sedan heading southbound on Franklin Avenue near Oaks Drive, according to Nassau County Police. SUNY To Officially Recognize Students' Chosen Names, Pronouns The State University of New York (SUNY) will begin officially recognizing students’ chosen names and pronouns.
