Capital District Homes Evacuated After Man Purposely Cuts Gas Line, Police Say A gas leak that forced the evacuation of several homes in the Capital District is being attributed to a mental health emergency, authorities said. Emergency crews in Albany County were called Monday afternoon, June 6, with a request for medical assistance at a home on Lexington Court in Voorheesville, according to the Albany County Sheriff’s Office. When medics arrived, they discovered a gas leak inside the home, prompting seven nearby homes to be evacuated out of precaution, police said. Motorcyclist Dies After Colliding With Companion's Bike In Capital District A woman has died after her motorcycle collided with a companion’s bike in the Capital District. New York State Police said the woman was riding on the Northway in Saratoga County just before 8 a.m. Wednesday, June 8, when she attempted to change lanes near Curry Road in the town of Malta. When she moved into the left lane, she struck another motorcycle and lost control before leaving the roadway and hitting a guardrail, police said. Embattled Former Nypd Officer From Long Island Sentenced For Firing Gun In Nassau County An embattled former NYPD officer is heading to prison for firing several gunshots into the ocean in Long Beach. David Afanador, age 41, of Long Beach, was sentenced to 16 months to four years behind bars Thursday, June 9, according to the Nassau County DA’s office. It followed his guilty plea in March to a single charge of criminal possession of a firearm, a felony. Boater Suffers Medical Emergency, Crashes Near Fire Island Marina, Police Say A boater had to be rescued after crashing near a marina on Fire Island. A 34-year-old Islip resident was operating a 25-foot boat Wednesday evening, June 8, when he apparently suffered a medical emergency, according to Suffolk County Police. Lance Broussand, age 37, of Hauppauge, was busted early Wednesday morning, June 8, after he was spotted driving the wrong way on Veterans Memorial Highway in Smithtown, according to Suffolk County Police. Albany County resident Ahlaumion Hall, age 25, of Cohes, is facing multiple charges in connection with the death of Charles Gibson Jr., according to the Albany County District Attorney’s Office. Capital District Man Sentenced For Sexually Exploiting 5-Year-Old Child A Capital District man will spend the next two decades in federal prison for sexually exploiting a young child. Schenectady resident Ronald Horton, age 24, was sentenced to 20 years behind bars Wednesday, June 8, according to the US Attorney’s Office in the North District. He had previously pleaded guilty to sexually exploiting a 5-year-old child. City Council Member In Capital District Admits To Casting Ballots In Others' Names A city council member in New York's Capital District has pleaded guilty to identity theft after sending in absentee ballots using other people’s names. Kimberly McPherson, age 61, of Troy, copped to the charges Wednesday, June 8, in federal court in Albany.
